In An Open Relationship

kecoh satu fesbuk pasai benda ni.

because this is so friggin daft, i change my status from single to in an open relationship. semuanya berpunca dari satu link yang korang dok share share share share dalam Fesbuk ni.

here

it says that:

An open relationship is a relationship in which the people involved agree that they want to be together, but in which romantic or sexual relationships with additional people are accepted, permitted or tolerated.

haha, first time i came across benda ni, aku gelak kuat-kuat. pe benda laa. ni la nama nya wat kerja tak habis, tak wat research. tak wat homework.

so, kalau in an Open Relationship ialah "sebuah hubungan di mana mereka yang terlibat setuju yang mereka mahu bersama, tapi di mana hubungan romantis dan seksual dengan kehadiran orang lain diterima, dibenarkan dan ditoleransi"..

Habis tu IN A RELATIONSHIP tu apa? cmon peeps. In a relationship, dalam interpretasi barat, melibatkan jalinan romantis and seksual gak.

kalau in an open relationship bermaksud bleh buat sex dengan orang lain, maknanya hat yang IN A RELATIONSHIP tu, wat sex dengan pasangan mereka ja, camtu? (ayat Samuel Teyl)

nak habaq mai, the whole idea about IN AN OPEN RELATIONSHIP adalah menerima pihak ketiga, keempat, kelima, atau kelapanbelas sekalipun dalam dorg punya hubungan. maksud open tu bukan la open minded sampai buat sex ke hape...adoi...

benda ni ikot konteks konteks masyarakat setempat...klu kat barat, bla kita in a relationship wiv someone, mmg org assume kita ada hubungan intim dgn org tu...klu kat sini, kat malaysia ni,  in a relationship maksudnya...cm kapel je..cmtu..klu in an open rltnshp, mksudnya kita kapel dgn org tu, tp brsedia kapel dgn org len gak...

hmmmm..bahasa ni murid-murid ku sayang, dia brkait rapat dgn budaya dan norma masyarakat tempat bahasa itu digunakan jugak...

so. pandai-pandai la kita interpret naa. like they said, theres no right or wrong, its how u defend ur arguements.

anyways, kudos to the guy yang tulih pasai tu, at least dia prihatin pasai orang islam kan?
love peace no war.

agreed.. it does show a lack of cultural understanding.. however, bear in mind that a language is defined by the parameters that society sets.. u may think that within your interpretation and as an eastern civilisation, we do not factor in sex as much as the westerners do.. but rejecting the true definition of the word "open relationship" is also wrong..

to a certain extent, i do agree with both of you. on one end, it shows lack of judgement and stupidity for people that use the status.. more so when you have an absolute lack of knowledge with regards to the origins and proudly display it knowing that its open for misinterpretation. wouldnt you think the same of someone who wrongly uses a word each time to define something else??.. (example below) on the other, since facebook has a shortage of relationship status options, this "open relationship" thing may be something that catches ur eye as its pretty unique and we easterners arent used to hearing it.. that desire to stand out and find a border between being really close but not a couple and not seeing anyone specifically but not single may compel us to choose this as a relationship status..

my case in point, imagine that ahmad's parents told him as a kid that the word "fuck you" is actually a greeting.. later on in life, he greets everyone else with a jolly and big "fuck you mate!!".. now he may get questioning looks and glances, but to him, theres nothing wrong with it.. he wasnt told that its actually hurtful.. then one day, someone comes along and tells him what it really means.. and he, displaying the same adamant and resilient nature you are now and refuses to change and keep greeting evryone with a "fuck you!" and a smile on his face evry morning.. now dont you think its pretty shallow and uncivilised for him to not change the greeting when he already know the meaning to the word??..

had it been in another language, i may cry foul as well.. but no.. its in the same language just in different understanding.. it is of my opinion that if you are to use a foreign language, the standard definition of the language should also apply.

my point with this lengthy post upon your blog is that language marks civilisation.. communication is vital and miscommunication is fatal.. if everyone is open to interpret on their own what a word or sentance would mean, whats the point of having a wholesome dictionary to refer to as one definite guide to all word/sentance definitions??.. applying one's own understanding to a word may be commended but not enouraged. especially when a majority of society and also the original creators/users of the words have already defined it as it is.

you, as a future english teacher out of all people should know this.. =)

cheers.
